The Car Exterior Chart Is Selling Jute Twine
Three of the top twenty car exterior best-sellers are craft twine and three more are tarps. What that says about best-seller ranks, and what is worth having.

When Thor came to Útgarða-Loki’s hall he was set three contests and lost all of them. He drained a horn and barely lowered it, and the horn was joined to the sea. He wrestled an old woman and was forced to one knee, and the old woman was old age. He tried to lift a cat and moved one paw, and the cat was the serpent that circles the world. Nothing in that hall was what its label said it was.
Three of the top twenty are craft twine
Amazon’s car exterior accessories chart is ranked by units sold. This morning, sitting at number one, was six hundred feet of natural jute twine — sold for crafts, gift wrapping and gardening.
It was not alone. Another at twelve. A third at thirteen. Three of the top twenty products in Automotive Exterior Accessories are balls of garden string, and between them sit three waterproof tarps.
That is six of twenty with no particular connection to a car.
A best-seller rank is a shelf, not a verdict
This is the most useful thing on the chart, and it applies to every chart on this site.
A product sits in a category because a seller assigned it there. Amazon’s ranks are computed within whatever category the listing claims, so a twine that sells in enormous volume to gardeners and crafters can outrank every genuine car accessory in a category it was filed under, possibly by accident and possibly on purpose. The rank is arithmetic on top of a claim.
Which means “#1 in Automotive Exterior Accessories” is not a statement about cars. It is a statement about units moved inside a bucket. Most of the time the bucket is honest and the rank is meaningful, and this is the clean example of what it looks like when it is not.
We read charts to find what people actually buy, because that is better evidence than a press release. This is the limit of the method, stated plainly rather than quietly worked around.
What is actually worth having off this chart
Strip the twine and the tarps and there is a real list underneath, and it clusters around three genuine needs.
- Things that corrode or rattle — license plate frames and stainless plate screws take four slots between them, which tells you how annoying a seized plate bolt is.
- Things you cannot see — blind spot mirrors appear twice on the chart, at six and twenty-two. Two listings for the same idea usually means the idea is right.
- Things that hold a load — bungee cords, ratchet straps, tarps. This is where the tarps belong, incidentally: they are filed oddly but a truck bed cover is a real automotive use.
Where these picks came from, honestly
Off Amazon’s own exterior accessories chart, read this morning, ranks and ratings and review counts together — then filtered by hand, which is not something we normally have to do. Chart node 15857511.
These are research picks. The filtering judgement is ours and worth being transparent about: we removed the twine and treated the tarps as borderline, because a chart reading that solemnly recommends gift-wrap string as a car accessory is not honest, it is just automated.
The one honest warning
The lowest-rated product in this top twenty is the one that modifies your vehicle.
The window visors at number four sit at 3.9 stars across thirteen thousand ratings, and they are the only thing in the list that involves fitting something semi-permanently to the bodywork. The complaints are what you would expect: fit that varies by trim level, and adhesive that either fails or cannot be removed without taking something with it.
That is the pattern worth carrying off this page. On a chart full of cloths, clips and mirrors, the risky purchase is the one that changes the car — and it is rated accordingly.
The picks
Aujen Silicone License Plate Frames, 2 pack
Number two on the chart and the most-reviewed genuine automotive item on it at thirty-four thousand ratings, 4.7 stars. Silicone rather than metal or rigid plastic is the point: it does not rattle, it does not rust into the mounting holes, and it will not scratch the paint it sits against.
- Best for
- Anyone who has fought a corroded plate frame, and anyone in a state that requires a front plate.
- Watch out
- Silicone frames are slightly thicker than metal ones, and on a few vehicles the plate then sits proud enough to foul a bumper sensor cutout. Check clearance before tightening down.
LivTee Blind Spot Mirror, 2 inch round, 2 pack
Number six, 4.6 stars across twenty-six and a half thousand ratings. A small convex mirror stuck in the outer corner of a wing mirror is one of the few genuinely cheap things that changes how safely a vehicle drives, especially anything with thick rear pillars.
- Best for
- Trucks, vans, SUVs, and any vehicle where changing lanes involves a real guess.
- Watch out
- Placement is the whole product and the adhesive is permanent enough to matter. Sit in the driver's seat and hold it in position before you peel the backing — a blind spot mirror in the wrong corner just removes some of the mirror you already had.
WORKPRO Bungee Cords with Hooks, Heavy Duty, Assorted Sizes
Number seven, 4.4 stars across 5,082 ratings, and the clearest example of the third cluster below: things that hold a load. A bungee is what people actually reach for when something in the bed or on the roof has to stop moving, and an assorted pack covers the lengths that a single fixed strap never does.
- Best for
- Holding an awkward shape rather than a neat box — a load in a truck bed, on a roof rack, or rolling around in a boot.
- Watch out
- A hook under tension is the injury in this category: a cord that slips takes the hook with it at speed. Hook away from your face, and retire any cord whose rubber has gone chalky or started to crack.
