The Tool Chart Has No Jack

Five of the top twenty automotive tools are for tires and not one of them is a jack. What a driver who runs a route every day actually keeps in the truck.

A low steel floor jack on a concrete driveway with its long flat body slid under the edge of a trailer deck beside a wheel, and a tall red bottle jack standing upright on the concrete behind it, both in open shade

When the dwarf Brokkr worked the bellows to forge Mjolnir, Loki took the shape of a fly and stung his eyelid. Brokkr flinched, once, and the hammer came out of the fire with a handle a hand’s breadth too short. The gods took it anyway. It was still the finest weapon ever made. The flaw was never the metal or the making. It was one measurement, and no amount of quality anywhere else could fix it.

Five of the top twenty are for tires. None of them is a jack.

Amazon’s automotive tools and equipment chart is ranked by units sold. Here is the top twenty this morning, sorted by what the products are actually for.

Five are about tires. Air compressors at numbers one, three and nine. A digital pressure gauge at eleven. A screw-in plug kit at twenty.

Not one is a jack. No trolley jack, no bottle jack, no low-profile jack, no stands. The chart will sell you three different ways to put air into a tire and no way at all to get a wheel off the ground.

It is worth knowing what else is in there. At number thirteen, a drawer organizer for a bathroom vanity. At nineteen, a solar panel for a Ring camera. Two of the twenty best-selling automotive tools in America are not automotive products.

What the driver actually said

We asked someone who drives a delivery route every working day what lives in his cab. The answer was paperwork and his own things. Not a kit, not an organizer, not a truck bed full of gear.

Asked what he had replaced more than once — the truest signal there is, because burn-through is the only recommendation that costs the person making it — the answer was nothing.

Asked what he actually needs, he said it in seven words: gloves, wipes and cleaner is about all you need.

Set that against a chart whose single best-selling automotive product nationally is a wooden air freshener, and whose car care top ten is four packs of microfiber cloths. The chart is selling car ownership as a hobby to people who park at an office. The man who parks a hundred times a day has three items, and one of them — gloves — does not appear anywhere in the top twenty tools.

The bottle jack that would not fit

The one time the short list broke was a flat on the trailer. He had a bottle jack, and a bottle jack is a good tool: enormous lifting capacity for its size, cheap, almost nothing to go wrong.

It would not fit under the trailer.

That is the entire failure. Nothing was wrong with the jack. It was too tall to slide under a low deck, and a jack that cannot get beneath the vehicle has a lifting capacity of zero. He bought a low-profile floor jack and the problem was over.

No chart tells you this. No star rating, no review count and no comparison table contains the height of the gap under your own trailer. The specification that decided it was clearance — and clearance is a measurement you take yourself, lying on the ground beside the thing you own.

Where these picks came from, honestly

The ranks, ratings and review counts are read straight off Amazon’s automotive tools and car care charts this morning, all on the same morning, best-sellers first as always. Chart nodes: node 15718271 (car care), node 15706941 (automotive tools & equipment).

The rest of it is not a chart reading. This is the first article in this door written from the truck rather than the list. The driver quoted here runs a working route out of this household, which is why the answers are short, unsentimental and mostly about what he has never needed to buy. We said when this door opened that we would say plainly which articles were research and which were lived. This one is lived, and it is shorter for it.

The one honest warning

Asked what drivers waste money on, he said fuel additives, maybe — and the hedge is the honest part, because nobody can prove a negative about what an additive did not do to an engine.

The chart makes the case better than the hedge does. On the oils and fluids best-seller list, three of the top thirteen products are additives: a fuel stabilizer at number four on 36,577 ratings, a fuel system cleaner at five, and a diesel treatment at thirteen. They sell enormously and the people who buy them rate them highly.

Here is the tension worth sitting with. A stabilizer genuinely earns its place in fuel that will sit for months — a generator, a mower, a seasonal vehicle. In a truck that burns a full tank every few days, the fuel never sits long enough to go off, and the additive is solving a problem that vehicle does not have. The product is not bad. It is being sold to the wrong tank — which is the same failure as a bottle jack that will not fit. A good tool, the wrong measurement, and the only person who can catch it is you.

The picks

AstroAI AIRUN H Tire Inflator Portable Air Compressor

The most-reviewed product on the entire automotive tools chart at 106,643 ratings on 4.5 stars, sitting at number nine. Three separate air compressors hold places in the top twenty, and this is the one the largest number of people have actually bought and rated.

Best for
Pressure you top up in the driveway, a slow leak you are nursing to a shop, and the trailer tire nobody checks until it looks low.
Watch out
It puts air in a tire. It does not lift a vehicle. A flat that needs the wheel off is not a flat a compressor solves, and this chart will sell you three of these before it sells you anything that gets an axle off the ground.

AstroAI S8 Car Battery Jump Starter, 1500A

Number twenty-one on 4.4 stars across 12,450 ratings. The other roadside stop that actually happens: a battery that will not turn over in a parking lot, at the one hour of the day when nobody is around to give you a cable.

Best for
Anyone whose vehicle is how they earn, and anyone who parks somewhere with no second car in sight.
Watch out
A lithium jump pack self-discharges on a shelf. Left in a hot glovebox and never topped up, it will be flat on the morning you finally need it. This is a thing you maintain, not a thing you store.

Armor All Car Cleaning Wipes, 90 Count Canister

Number seven on the car care chart, 4.5 stars across 26,644 ratings. A canister lives in a door pocket and gets used because it is there, which is the only reason any cleaning product ever gets used in a vehicle.

Best for
Hands, the wheel, the door handle, the thing that spilled. Everything you touch thirty times a day.
Watch out
These are interior wipes and they are not a substitute for washing your hands. They are also not for glass, because a wipe formulated to leave a protectant behind will haze a windshield, which is the one surface you cannot afford to smear.

Chemical Guys Total Interior Cleaner and Protectant

Number three on the car care chart at 4.6 stars across 44,604 ratings. It is the highest-placed cleaning product in that chart's top ten, and tied with the leather conditioner at number nine for the best score among them. One bottle covers dash, plastics, vinyl and screens, which is the whole interior of a working vehicle.

Best for
The one bottle you keep if you are only keeping one.
Watch out
Protectant finishes can leave a slick film. Use it on the dash and the panels, and keep it off the steering wheel and the pedals, which are the two surfaces that need grip.
