The Camp Bedding Chart Has No Cot
Nine of the top twenty camp bedding best-sellers are air mattresses, three are sleeping bags and three are beach blankets. There is not one cot on it.

Thor and his companions sheltered in what they took to be a great hall with a side chamber, and slept badly all night as the ground shook. In the morning the hall turned out to be the giant Skrymir’s glove, and the side chamber its thumb. They had not chosen wrong between two shelters. They had failed to notice what shape the thing actually was.
What is actually on the chart
Amazon calls it Sleeping Bags & Camp Bedding. The top twenty, sorted by what the products are:
- Nine air mattresses — Intex, King Koil, SoundAsleep and the rest
- Four sleeping pads — foam and inflatable
- Three sleeping bags
- Two ground blankets — a beach blanket and a picnic mat, neither of which is camping equipment by any definition
- One camping pillow, one bottle of waterproofing spray
There is not a single cot. Not a folding cot, not a cot pad, nothing. On a chart named for sleeping bags, there are three of those and nine air mattresses.
Why the air mattresses win
Because this is a car camping chart wearing a backpacking name, and because air mattresses have a second life as guest beds. A very large share of these are bought by people who will never take them outdoors — and a queen air mattress bought for a spare room ranks identically to one bought for a tent.
Cots, by contrast, are bulky to ship, expensive to return and bought by a narrower group. They do not disappear because they are bad. They disappear because the chart measures units and cots do not move like inflatables do.
How to actually choose
One question decides most of it: how cold is the ground, and how far are you carrying this?
- Pad — the only option that both insulates well and survives abuse. It is the warmest per pound, it cannot puncture if it is closed-cell foam, and it is the right answer for cold ground. It is also the least comfortable on a bad back.
- Air mattress — the most comfortable and the coldest. The air inside circulates and pulls heat out of you into the ground. Fine in summer, genuinely miserable below about 50°F unless you put a blanket or a foam pad underneath yourself, on top of the mattress.
- Cot — the one the chart will not sell you, and the right answer for two specific cases: rough or wet ground, and anyone who struggles to get up off the floor. It lifts you clear of both problems and it is the only option that improves with age rather than the reverse.
A cot plus a thin pad is the most comfortable setup on this list and the one nobody arrives at from a best-seller ranking.
Where these picks came from, honestly
Ranks, ratings and review counts read straight off Amazon’s sleeping bags and camp bedding chart this morning, best-sellers first, checked against every product used elsewhere on this site — the chart’s number-one air mattress is already covered in our car camping piece, so it is discussed here rather than sold twice. Chart node 3401611.
These are research picks. The cold-through-an-air-mattress problem is well documented and widely experienced; we are reporting it rather than claiming to have measured it.
The one honest warning
The three beach blankets are the tell, and they are the reason to distrust this chart’s shape rather than its individual products.
A sandproof beach blanket at numbers four, fourteen and twenty is not camp bedding. It is on this chart because it is a large flat thing you lie on, and the categorisation cannot tell the difference between lying on a beach in July and sleeping on the ground in October.
That is a harmless error on its own. It matters because the same blindness is why there is no cot — the chart cannot distinguish between products that solve the same problem and products that merely resemble each other. If you shop this list top-down you will end up with an air mattress and a beach blanket, which is a good day out and a cold night.
The picks
SoundAsleep Dream Series Raised Queen Air Mattress
Number ten and the most-reviewed product on the entire camp bedding chart at 66,769 ratings on 4.4 stars. The internal coil structure is what separates this from the flat-by-morning category, and it is the reason it has held its position for years.
- Best for
- Car camping with a big tent, and for guests at home — which is honestly where most of these live most of the year.
- Watch out
- Air mattresses lose heat downward badly. The air inside conducts your warmth straight to the ground, which is why people are colder on an air mattress at 45°F than on a thin foam pad.
MalloMe Sleeping Bags for Adults, Cold and Warm Weather
Number two at 4.5 stars across 17,284 ratings, and the highest-placed of only three sleeping bags anywhere in this chart's top twenty. On a chart named for sleeping bags, that scarcity is the finding.
- Best for
- Three-season car camping where packed size does not matter and you want one bag that covers most nights.
- Watch out
- Temperature ratings on budget bags are survival ratings, not comfort ratings. A bag rated to freezing will keep you alive at freezing and will not let you sleep at it.
CYMULA Memory Foam Camping Mattress Pad
Number four at 4.4 stars across 2,287 ratings. Foam is the option that cannot puncture, needs no pump, and insulates rather than conducting — the three ways an air mattress fails, all absent.
- Best for
- Cold ground, rough ground, and anyone who has woken up on the floor because a valve let go at 2 a.m.
- Watch out
- Foam does not pack down. This will take a meaningful share of a car boot and it will not get smaller, which is the entire trade you are making against an air mattress.
Hikenture Camping Pillow with Removable Cover
Number twelve at 4.4 stars across 10,989 ratings, and the item most likely to be dismissed and most likely to fix a bad night. A rolled jacket compresses to nothing by 1 a.m. and a proper pillow does not.
- Best for
- Everyone, and especially side sleepers, who need more loft than a stuff sack of clothing will ever hold.
- Watch out
- Bare inflatable pillows are loud, slippery and sweaty against skin. The removable fabric cover is the part doing the work here, so do not buy the version without one.
