Craft Gifts for Someone Who Actually Makes Things

The craft supplies chart is essential oils, laminating sheets, spray paint and three listings of the same school glue stick. It cannot tell you what to give.

A cluttered workbench under a bright lamp with two cans of spray paint standing beside a small tube of clear adhesive, a half-finished beaded piece on a felt mat, and a dark amber dropper bottle of essential oil at the edge of the frame

Brokkr and Eitri made three treasures in a single working — a ship that folded into a pouch, a boar that outran horses, a hammer that always returned — while Loki as a fly bit at the hands doing it. Nobody in that story asks what the gold cost. The whole wager was about what came out of the forge, and the materials were never the point.

The chart cannot answer this question

Amazon’s craft supplies and materials chart, top twelve:

  • Three separate listings of the same Elmer’s disappearing purple school glue stick — at five, seven and ten, in different gram weights
  • Two essential oils — peppermint at two, tea tree at eight
  • Two cans of spray paint
  • One pack of Command picture hanging strips
  • Laminating sheets at number one, scrapbook tape, jewellery glue, a hole punch

This is a school supply run, a hardware aisle and an aromatherapy shelf, filed together. The single best-selling “craft supply” in the country is a pack of laminating sheets, the second is peppermint oil, and three of the top ten are the same washable glue stick sold in three sizes.

Nothing here tells you what to give a person who makes things, because nothing here knows what they make.

Why craft is the hardest category to buy for

Every other door on this site has some common ground — everyone who cooks needs a pan, everyone who camps needs to sleep. Craft has none. A quilter, a resin caster, a knitter, a model painter and a jeweller share almost no equipment and no consumables, and each of them has strong opinions inside their own medium that a well-meaning outsider cannot reproduce.

Which means the usual gift-guide move — find the highest-rated thing in the category — is actively wrong here. The highest-rated thing in the category is glue sticks.

The three gifts that work anyway

The consumable in their medium, in the boring colour. Makers buy exciting colours for themselves and run out of black, white, clear and plain. Whatever they use most of, in the least interesting version, is almost always welcome.

Storage for the thing they have too much of. Every maker has one material that has outgrown its container. You already know what it is, because it is visible from the doorway.

Light. Underrated in every craft, universal across all of them, and nobody buys themselves a good lamp until they are already struggling.

What does not work is a kit for a craft they do not do. It reads as a suggestion that they take up something else.

Where these picks came from, honestly

Ranks, ratings and review counts read straight off Amazon’s craft supplies and materials chart this morning, best-sellers first, and checked against the ten craft articles already on this site — two of our first choices were already used and were replaced. Chart node 378733011.

Worth recording: the Arts, Crafts & Sewing root chart returns no product grid at all when read directly, which is why this article is sourced from the Craft Supplies subcategory instead. That is a limitation of the source, not a judgement about the category.

These are research picks. There is making in this household — 3D printing, mostly — and the spray paint reasoning comes from finishing printed parts. The jewellery and soap-making notes are research.

The one honest warning

Three listings of one glue stick in a top ten is the chart telling you it is not measuring craft.

Elmer’s disappearing purple glue sticks at four, five and ten are the same product in 22g, 6g and 7g packs. They rank because it is August-to-September and children need school supplies, and school supplies file under arts and crafts.

That is worth knowing beyond this article. A best-seller chart is a snapshot of a season as much as a category — read the same chart in November and the school glue will have been replaced by something for the holidays, and neither reading is a statement about what crafters actually value.

If a chart’s top ten contains the same item three times, you are not looking at a ranking of a category. You are looking at one product having a moment, and everything around it is noise.

The picks

Krylon ColorMaxx Gloss Spray Paint, White

Number six at 4.6 stars across 26,266 ratings. White is the harder of the two basics to get right — thin coverage and yellowing are the usual failures — and a can that lays down opaque white in two passes saves more time than any tool at this price.

Best for
Priming and base coats, and for anyone painting anything that will later be a colour.
Watch out
Gloss white shows every speck of dust and every drip. It is the least forgiving finish to spray, and it wants a genuinely still, clean space.

B7000 Clear Jewelry Glue, 50ml

Number nine at 4.6 stars across 9,656 ratings. It is the adhesive that bonds metal, glass, rhinestone and fabric without clouding, which is the specific gap that hot glue and superglue both leave in jewellery and embellishment work.

Best for
Beading, jewellery making, embellished cards and anything where a visible glue line would ruin the piece.
Watch out
The fumes are strong and the cure is slow — full strength takes a day. It is not a substitute for a fast adhesive, it is a substitute for a *bad-looking* one.

Handcraft Blends Peppermint Essential Oil, 4 Fl Oz

Number two on the entire craft supplies chart at 4.7 stars across 28,245 ratings — and it is here as evidence rather than endorsement. The best-selling craft supply in America is a bottle of peppermint oil, which tells you most of what you need to know about this chart.

Best for
Candle and soap makers, for whom it is a genuine raw material rather than a category error.
Watch out
Essential oils rank here because of aromatherapy buyers, not crafters. Unless the person actually makes candles, soap or balms, this is the chart's mistake and not a gift.
