The Cleaning Supplies Worth Rebuying
Three things that earn their place in the cupboard, what each one is actually for, and the jobs where reaching for the wrong one causes damage.

Breiðablik was the hall where nothing unclean could enter, which is a standard no real house meets. The realistic version is a cupboard with a few things in it that actually work, rather than eleven bottles that mostly do the same job.
Three earn their place permanently. Each has a job, and each has a job it should never be used for — which is the part the labels are quiet about.
Melamine foam, and what it really is
The Magic Eraser is the most misunderstood cleaning product in most houses. People treat it as a magic sponge. It is an abrasive — melamine foam is a very fine, very hard open structure that works like extremely fine sandpaper, which is why it removes scuffs with water alone and no chemicals.
Once you know that, both halves make sense. On flat or matte painted walls, doors, skirting and sinks, it removes marks nothing else touches. On anything with a finish — gloss or satin paint, car paint, stainless with a brushed grain, non-stick coating, screens, polished stone — it takes the finish off with the mark, and that does not come back.
The rule that keeps you out of trouble: if the surface is shiny and you want it to stay shiny, use something else.
Disinfectant, and the step everyone skips
Disinfecting wipes are sold on convenience and used incorrectly almost universally. The label carries a contact time — the surface must stay visibly wet for a stated period, often several minutes, for the disinfection claim to hold.
A single quick wipe that dries in twenty seconds is cleaning. It removes visible soil, which is genuinely useful, but it is not what the label promises. If you want the claim, wipe the surface until it stays wet and leave it.
That one detail matters more than which brand you buy, because the actives across mainstream wipes are broadly similar. Buy on price per wipe and on the canister not drying out.
Avoid them on unsealed wood and bare stone, where the liquid goes into the material rather than sitting on it.
Bin bags, where thickness is the whole product
There is nothing clever to say about bin bags, which is exactly why people buy on price and regret it. The two failure points are the drawstring tearing out and the side seam splitting while the bag is being carried, and both scale with thickness.
Scent is the wrong thing to optimise for. Perfume does not remove odour, it adds to it, and in a hot house the combination is frequently worse than the original. If smell is the problem, the answer is emptying more often or a bin with a better seal, not a stronger fragrance.
Match the bag to the bin properly. A bag slightly too small stretches at the rim, which is where the tearing starts.
What we would skip
Separate specialist sprays for every room. Bathroom, kitchen and glass cleaners overlap heavily. One good general cleaner plus one glass cleaner covers most of it.
Antibacterial everything. For ordinary household surfaces, soap, water and physical wiping do most of the work. Save the disinfectant for genuinely high-risk surfaces.
How we checked this
We have not bought these ourselves. This page is built the way the rest of the site is: owner reviews read over time, the makers’ own labels and usage instructions — the contact-time guidance is on the product label, not our invention — published guidance on melamine foam and finished surfaces, and the complaints that keep repeating. Where a detail is the reason something works or causes damage, we have said which detail and why.
Prices change constantly, so we do not print them. Check the current price on Amazon.
The picks
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (Original)
Melamine foam is a very fine abrasive that works with water alone, which is why it removes scuffs nothing else touches. Understanding that it abrades is the difference between a miracle and a ruined finish.
- Best for
- Scuffed painted walls, skirting boards, doors, sinks, and marks on hard floors.
- Watch out
- It is sandpaper, not a sponge. Never use it on gloss or satin paint, car paint, non-stick pans, phone screens, or anything polished — it will dull the finish permanently.
Amazon Basics disinfecting wipes (3-pack canisters)
The convenience format for high-touch surfaces. What matters is not the brand but the contact time on the label, which almost nobody actually follows.
- Best for
- Handles, switches, worktops after raw meat, bathroom taps, and anything touched by many hands.
- Watch out
- Disinfectant needs the surface to stay visibly wet for the time stated on the label — usually several minutes. One quick wipe cleans but does not disinfect. Not for unsealed wood or bare stone.
Hefty Ultra Strong tall kitchen bags (13 gallon)
The whole product is whether the drawstring holds and the seam survives being carried. Bin bag failure is the most annoying preventable mess in a house.
- Best for
- Standard 13-gallon kitchen bins, and any bin that gets carried through the house to an outside bin.
- Watch out
- Bag thickness matters more than scent. Scented bags mask odour rather than remove it, and in a hot climate the perfume plus the smell can be worse than the smell.
