How to Clean a Glass Stove Top Without Scratching It
The cleaning chart is nine-tenths paper towels and sells nothing for a cooktop. The two products that do the job sit on a different chart entirely.

Of all the halls in the poems, Breiðablik is described only from outside — the far-shining one, visible at a distance. Nothing is recorded about its interior.
A glass cooktop has the same problem. It is the largest reflective surface in most kitchens, it is at eye level to nobody and in the eyeline of everybody, and it shows every single thing that has happened to it.
The cleaning chart does not sell what you need
Amazon’s Household Cleaning chart, read this morning. Of the top fourteen:
Nine are paper towels. Bounty three times, Scott twice, Sparkle twice, Brawny, Viva.
The remaining five are a toilet bowl gel, two packs of disinfecting wipes, an all-purpose spray and a glass cleaner. Nothing for a cooktop. Nothing abrasive. No scraper.
If you searched that chart for the answer to this question you would come away with Windex, which is the wrong product — a glass cleaner is formulated for windows, evaporates fast, and has no abrasive to lift baked-on film. It will make a cool cooktop shine and do nothing at all to the brown ring.
The products that work are one chart across, under Kitchen Cleaners, where the cooktop kit sits at number thirteen on eighty-five thousand ratings. Same retailer, different list, and no obvious reason a shopper would find it.
The method matters more than the product
Ceramic glass is hard, and the scratches people fear almost never come from the cleaner. They come from grit dragged across it, or from scrubbing dried cream cleanser, or from a pan pushed rather than lifted.
The sequence that works:
- Let it cool completely. Cream cleanser on a warm cooktop dries into the haze everyone mistakes for damage.
- Wipe the loose crumbs off first. This is the step that prevents scratches — anything gritty left on the surface becomes sandpaper the moment you start rubbing.
- Cream cleanser, worked wet, with a soft pad. Not a scourer, not the green side of a sponge.
- The scraper, held almost flat, for burned-on sugar or boil-over. Held at a low angle a razor scraper is the correct tool and is designed for this; held upright it is a chisel.
- Buff off completely with a dry microfibre. The residue is what dulls it.
Sugar is the exception to all of the above. A sugar spill on a hot ceramic cooktop should be scraped off while it is still hot, because sugar cooling on the glass can bond and pit the surface permanently. It is the one time you do not wait.
Where these picks came from, honestly
All three read off Amazon’s own Kitchen Cleaners chart this morning — node 15693661 — rank, rating and review count together, best-sellers first. All three are research picks. The count of paper towels on the Household Cleaning chart 15342821 was done by hand and is why this piece starts where it does. The method is standard manufacturer guidance for ceramic glass, not a technique we invented.
The one honest warning
The cleaning chart being nine-tenths paper towels is not a quirk. It is the shape of every consumables chart, and it will mislead you the same way every time.
A best-seller list ranks by units moved. Paper towels are bought every week by nearly every household; a cooktop cleaner is bought twice a year by the subset of people who own a ceramic hob. On units alone the paper wins by an enormous margin, forever, and no amount of the cooktop cleaner being the right product will ever move it up that particular list.
So the failure mode is specific and worth naming: you search a category, read the top ten, and conclude that the product you need does not exist or is not popular. What actually happened is that you read a chart measuring frequency and asked it a question about suitability.
The practical fix is to find the narrowest category that contains what you want. Household Cleaning gave paper. Kitchen Cleaners gave a cooktop kit with eighty-five thousand ratings sitting at number thirteen. Same site, same day — one search term apart.
The picks
Weiman glass and ceramic cooktop, stove top and oven cleaner kit
Number thirteen on Amazon's Kitchen Cleaners chart this morning, 4.7 stars across eighty-five thousand ratings — the second most-reviewed product on that chart and the only one on it made specifically for a glass cooktop. It is a mild cream abrasive with a scraper and a pad in the box, which is the correct combination: the cream lifts the film, the scraper takes off what the cream cannot, and neither is harsh enough to scratch ceramic glass.
- Best for
- Weekly cleaning, burned-on sugar and boil-overs, and any cooktop that has gone cloudy rather than dirty.
- Watch out
- The cream has to be worked while wet and then fully buffed off. Left to dry it leaves a white haze that looks exactly like the damage you were trying to remove, and people then scrub harder, which is how a cooktop actually gets marked.
Bar Keepers Friend soft cleanser liquid, 2-pack
Number nine, 4.6 stars across seven thousand ratings. Oxalic acid in a mild abrasive base, and the thing it does that no detergent can is dissolve mineral deposits and heat-discolouration rather than just scrubbing at them. On a cooktop that has gone brown-grey around the elements — which is water minerals baked on, not grease — it is the product that works when the degreaser did not.
- Best for
- Hard-water marks, rainbow heat discolouration, stainless pans, and the ring around the burner nobody can shift.
- Watch out
- It is an acid. Gloves, keep it off stone and off anything anodised, never mix it with bleach, and rinse it fully rather than leaving it to sit. The soft cleanser liquid is the right form here — the powder is more aggressive than a cooktop needs.
Weiman stainless steel cleaner and polish wipes, 30 count
Number six, 4.6 stars across forty-two thousand ratings, and included because most people cleaning a cooktop are standing in front of an oven door and a fridge made of something else entirely. Stainless has the opposite requirement to ceramic glass: no abrasive at all, and a polish that goes with the grain.
- Best for
- The oven door, the fridge, the hood, and everything the cooktop cleaner must not touch.
- Watch out
- Wipe with the grain of the steel, not in circles, or it streaks. And these are for stainless — using a stainless polish on the glass cooktop leaves an oily film that then burns on next time you cook.
