Laundry by the Load, Not the Bottle

The laundry chart is pods, boosters and a machine cleaner with three hundred thousand ratings. What it says about buying detergent, counted in loads.

A laundry corner with a front-loading washer door open, a plain white detergent jug and a small measuring cup of blue liquid on top, a basket of folded white towels beside it

Breiðablik was Baldr’s hall, and the one thing the old poem says about it is that nothing unclean was allowed inside. Not a rule about the god. A rule about the house.

That is the laundry chart in a sentence, and the chart has a lot to say about how people keep the rule.

The chart is pods, boosters, and a cleaner for the machine

Amazon’s laundry supplies chart, read this morning, is twenty products and only six of them are detergent.

  • Detergent at three, four, seven, nine, fifteen and sixteen. Tide four times, Gain once, Arm & Hammer once. Pods at three and sixteen, liquid for the rest.
  • Boosters and additives at five, ten, eighteen and twenty. A laundry sanitizer, two OxiClean powders, and a plain box of washing soda.
  • Scent at eight, eleven, thirteen and nineteen. Fabric softener and scent beads, which do nothing for cleanliness and hold four of the top twenty places anyway.
  • Stain sprays at one and fourteen. The number one laundry product on Amazon this morning is a stain spray for babies’ clothes.
  • Machine cleaners at two and six, with the most-reviewed product on the whole chart at number two.
  • Detergent sheets at twelve and seventeen, which we will come back to.

The picture is a household that buys one detergent, one thing to fix the loads the detergent cannot, one thing to make the machine stop smelling, and two things to make the clothes smell of something else.

Count in loads

Every product on this chart is sold by size and used by the load, and the gap between the two is where the money goes.

A bottle says a hundred loads. Nobody measures liquid, so it does sixty. A pod is one load and cannot be overpoured, which is the real reason pods outsell the liquid they are made of. Scent beads are sold by the ounce and used by the capful, so the bag lasts as long as your hand decides. Sheets are sold as sixty loads and used one per load, which is honest, until a big load needs two.

So the rule is: buy by loads, not by bottles, and decide in advance what one load costs you. A pod is the only product on the chart where the answer is already fixed. That is not a small thing in a house where three people do the washing.

Where these picks came from, honestly

Read off Amazon’s own laundry chart this morning, rank, rating and review count together, best-sellers first. Research picks. The washing-soda pick comes from living with hard water, which is a Phoenix fact and not a product review; the rest is the chart.

The one honest warning

The detergent sheets at twelve and seventeen have a hundred thousand and thirty thousand ratings between them, and they carry the lowest ratings of any big seller on the chart: 4.4 and 4.5, against 4.8 for every pod and liquid in the top twenty. That gap is the warning. They are light, they travel, they take no space, and the chart says a large number of people are less happy with the wash than they are with everything else on the list.

If you buy them, buy them for the reasons they are good at, the travel bag and the tiny apartment, and keep a pod in the cupboard for the load that matters.

The picks

Tide PODS laundry detergent pacs, 3-in-1

Number three on the laundry chart and the best-selling detergent in any form, 4.8 stars across two hundred and seventy-seven thousand ratings. Tide holds four of the top twenty places. The pod solves the problem the liquid bottle creates: nobody measures liquid, everyone pours, and a bottle rated for a hundred loads does sixty. A pod is one load, every time.

Best for
Anyone who overpours, shared machines, and households where three different people do the washing.
Watch out
One pod is one normal load. A big load of towels wants two and a small load still costs one, so the per-load arithmetic only works if your loads are the size the pod was designed for. And they go in the drum first, under the clothes, not in the drawer.

Affresh washing machine cleaner tablets, 6 count

Number two, and the most-reviewed thing on the entire laundry chart: 4.7 stars across two hundred and ninety-three thousand ratings. Not a detergent. A tablet you run through an empty machine once a month, because a front-loader that smells of mildew is not dirty clothes, it is a dirty machine, and no amount of detergent fixes that.

Best for
Front-loaders, any machine that has started to smell, and the new machine you would like to keep from starting.
Watch out
One tablet a month is the whole instruction and it is the part people skip. The six-count box lasts half a year and then sits empty for a year, which is how the smell comes back.

OxiClean Odor Blasters versatile odor and stain remover powder, 5 lb

Number ten, 4.8 stars across forty-eight thousand ratings, and one of two OxiClean powders in the top twenty. A booster, not a detergent: a scoop in with the pod for the loads that need it, which is gym clothes, towels, and anything a child or a dog has been near. Oxygen bleach lifts what detergent leaves behind without bleaching the colour out.

Best for
Sweat, towels, pet bedding, and the load you would otherwise wash twice.
Watch out
It needs to dissolve, and in a cold-water cycle a scoop of powder can land on the clothes as a wet clump. Warm water or a pre-dissolve in a jug. And it is a booster for hard loads, not something to add to every wash out of habit.

Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

Number eighteen, 4.8 stars across fifty-seven thousand ratings, and the oldest product on the chart by decades. Sodium carbonate in a box. It softens hard water so the detergent actually works, which in a city on well and canal water is not a small thing, and it is the ingredient in most of the boosters above, sold plain.

Best for
Hard-water households, stripping the build-up out of towels, and anyone who would rather buy the ingredient than the brand.
Watch out
It is caustic enough to need gloves and it is not baking soda, whatever the box's cousin looks like. It also does nothing on its own; it makes the detergent work better, which means a load with washing soda and no detergent is a load washed in salt water.
