The Laundry Shelf That Cleans Nothing

Softener, beads and dryer sheets hold four of the laundry top twenty. They do real things. None of those things is cleaning, and one of them costs you towels.

A white laundry shelf above a dryer holding a tall plain white bottle of fabric softener, a small clear jar of pale blue scent beads, a folded stack of fluffy white towels and a plain white box of dryer sheets, one sheet draped over the edge of the shelf

Grímnismál walks through the halls of the gods one by one. Of Breiðablik it says almost nothing — only that Baldr built his hall there, in the land where the fewest harmful runes lie buried.

Not the most beautiful ground. Not the cleanest. The ground with the least wrong underneath it.

That is a good standard for a house, and it is the opposite of what the laundry chart sells four times in its top twenty.

Four of the top twenty are fragrance

Amazon’s laundry supplies chart, read this morning:

  • Number nine, liquid fabric softener.
  • Number ten, scent booster beads — a second Downy listing, and one worth coming back to.
  • Number thirteen, scent booster beads again, the big one, with a hundred and twenty-seven thousand ratings.
  • Number nineteen, dryer sheets, with a hundred and fourteen thousand.

Between them those four carry roughly three hundred thousand ratings. Not one of them removes soil, and none of them claims to. They are on a chart called laundry supplies doing a job that has nothing to do with laundry being clean.

The chart is honest about this. The labels are honest about this. It is the household that quietly confuses the two, because the entire sensory evidence anyone has that a wash worked is how the clothes smell coming out of the machine.

What they actually do, which is not nothing

It is easy to be sneery here and it would be wrong.

Softener and dryer sheets deposit a thin positively-charged film on fibres. That film genuinely makes cotton feel softer, genuinely stops static, and genuinely makes ironing easier. Scent beads genuinely hold fragrance in a fibre for weeks in a way that detergent perfume does not. These are real effects that people can feel, which is why the products have three hundred thousand ratings and 4.8 stars.

The problem is not that they do nothing. The problem is that a coating is a coating, and half your laundry is things that work by absorbing or moving water.

  • Towels dry you by wicking. A softened towel repels water. People replace “worn out” towels that are only coated.
  • Activewear moves sweat outward through the weave. Softener blocks that, and the trapped bacteria is the reason gym clothes smell after two washes.
  • Microfibre cloths clean by electrostatic attraction. Softener neutralises exactly that.
  • Children’s flame-resistant sleepwear carries a care label saying no softener, because the coating degrades the treatment.

None of that appears on the front of a bottle, and all of it is on the care label of the garment.

The residue has a second bill

Look at number two on the same chart: a washing machine cleaner with two hundred and ninety-three thousand ratings, the most-reviewed product in the whole category, sold for the specific job of removing residue and smell from the inside of a machine.

Some of that residue is detergent. A good deal of it, in a front-loader, is softener, because the stuff is designed to stick to surfaces and a wash drum is a surface. The chart’s second-best-seller is, in part, the cleanup product for the chart’s ninth-best-seller.

That is not a reason to never use softener. It is a reason to know you are buying two things when you buy one.

The rule that comes out of it

Decide per load, not per household.

Sheets and cotton clothes: softener earns its place. Towels, activewear, microfibre and kids’ sleepwear: nothing on the scent shelf goes near them. Anything that smells bad rather than merely un-perfumed: the sanitizer at number seven, not the beads at thirteen, because you have a bacteria problem and fragrance is a lid on it.

If you take one thing from this chart, take that last one. Covering an odour and removing it are different purchases, and the chart sells the covering four times and the removal once.

Where these picks came from, honestly

All four read off Amazon’s own laundry supplies chart this morning, rank, rating and review count together, best-sellers first. All four are research picks. The mechanism — cationic film, wicking, the flame-resistance caution — is standard textile-care material and is printed on the care labels of the garments themselves; it is not something we tested. Hard water is a Phoenix fact around here and stiff cotton is a genuine local problem, which is the one part of this we can speak to first-hand.

The one honest warning

Number ten on this chart is a Downy Unstopables listing with five thousand nine hundred ratings. Number thirteen is a Downy Unstopables listing with one hundred and twenty-seven thousand. Same brand, same product family, three places apart, and one of them has been reviewed twenty times more than the other.

That gap is not quality. It is age. A new variation — a new fragrance, a new bottle size, a limited collection — starts its review count at zero and inherits the brand’s chart position through advertising and shelf placement. It can sit in the top ten on a few thousand ratings while its sibling below it carries a hundred thousand.

When two listings from the same brand sit near each other with wildly different review counts, the low one is usually newer, not worse — and also unproven. For a fragrance that is a small risk. For anything you actually depend on, buy the one with the long record.

The picks

Downy Unstopables in-wash scent booster beads, fresh scent, 24 oz

Number thirteen on Amazon's laundry chart this morning, 4.8 stars across one hundred and twenty-seven thousand six hundred ratings — the most-rated scent product on the chart and more ratings than any detergent on it except Tide's pods. Beads dissolve in the wash and leave fragrance in the fibre, which is the whole function. They do it well and they do it for weeks, which is exactly why the review count is what it is.

Best for
Clothes that get stored between seasons, anyone who genuinely likes the smell, and stripping the musty note out of a closet-stored blanket.
Watch out
The scoop on the lid is bigger than the dose most people need and the bag is used by the capful, so the bag lasts as long as your hand decides. Start at half a cap. And this is fragrance, not cleaning — a load that comes out smelling clean and is not clean is the failure mode this product enables.

Downy liquid fabric softener, April Fresh, 140 fl oz, 190 loads

Number nine, 4.8 stars across forty-one thousand five hundred ratings. Softener works by depositing a thin cationic film on the fibres — that film is what makes cotton feel soft, kills static and carries the scent. It is a real, measurable effect. It is also the reason for every caution in this article, because a coating that makes cotton feel soft is a coating.

Best for
Cotton sheets and clothing where softness and static are the whole point, and hard-water households where cotton comes out stiff.
Watch out
Never on towels, never on activewear, never on microfibre, and never on children's flame-resistant sleepwear — the coating reduces absorbency, blocks wicking, kills the electrostatic grab microfibre cleans with, and degrades flame resistance. Those four exclusions cover a surprising share of a normal wash.

Bounce fabric softener sheets, outdoor fresh, 240 count

Number nineteen, 4.8 stars across one hundred and fourteen thousand ratings — the fourth scent product in the top twenty and the one that needs no measuring, which is most of its appeal. A dryer sheet does the same coating job as liquid softener, applied hot and dry instead of wet.

Best for
Static in winter, a dryer that tangles everything into one rope, and households where nobody will reliably pour a cap of anything.
Watch out
Same exclusion list as the liquid, plus one of its own: the residue builds up on the dryer's lint screen as an invisible film that restricts airflow. Wash the screen with hot water and a brush every few months — if water pools on it instead of running through, that is the film, and a restricted dryer runs longer and hotter than it should.

Lysol laundry sanitizer, crisp linen, 90 oz

Number seven, 4.8 stars across one hundred and thirteen thousand ratings, and the reason it is on this list is contrast. It is the top-twenty product that actually addresses the thing people buy scent for. Odour in clothing is usually bacteria living in the fibre, and a cold wash with ordinary detergent does not deal with them. A sanitizer additive does, and it does it without laying down a softening film.

Best for
Gym clothes, towels that have gone sour, anything washed cold, and the load after someone in the house has been ill.
Watch out
It is an additive, not a detergent, and it goes in the softener dispenser — which means you are choosing between this and softener in the same cycle. That is the choice this whole article is about. It also does nothing for stains or dirt.
