Air Fryer vs Toaster Oven: What the Chart Actually Sells

Two air fryers sit in Amazon's small appliance top twenty and not one toaster oven. What that says, and which of the two belongs on your counter.

A kitchen counter with a basket-style air fryer open and empty beside a slim two-slice toaster, a bare stretch of worktop between them and a wall socket above

At Ægir’s hall the ale poured itself, and the story never once mentions where the brewing happened. Thor had to fetch a cauldron a mile deep from a giant before any of it was possible, and that cauldron does not appear in a single description of the feast.

The equipment is never the part anyone remembers. It is still the part that decides what gets made.

The chart has two air fryers and no toaster oven

Amazon’s Kitchen Small Appliances chart, read this morning, top twenty:

  1. A slim two-slice toaster.
  2. An egg cooker — 137,000 ratings.
  3. A personal blender.
  4. An immersion blender.
  5. An electric kettle.
  6. A single-serve coffee maker — 3.9 stars.
  7. A personal blender — 121,000 ratings.
  8. A single-serve coffee maker.
  9. Vacuum sealer bags.
  10. An air fryer, 6 qt.
  11. A coffee maker.
  12. A slow cooker — 62,000 ratings.
  13. An electric kettle.
  14. Vacuum sealer bags.
  15. A slim toaster.
  16. A single-serve coffee maker.
  17. An electric burner.
  18. An air fryer, 4 qt.
  19. A mason jar vacuum sealer kit.
  20. An egg cooker.

Two air fryers. Two toasters. No toaster oven anywhere in it.

That is a striking absence in a comparison people search for constantly, and it is the most useful thing this chart has to say: in the fight for the counter, the toaster oven appears to have lost, and it lost to a machine that does the same job with a fan in it.

They are closer than the marketing suggests

An air fryer is a small convection oven. That is not a criticism and it is not a technicality — it is the whole mechanism. A heating element, a fan moving hot air fast, and a basket that lets the air get underneath. A toaster oven is the same box without the aggressive fan and with a rack instead of a basket.

So the honest comparison is not what can each one cook, because the answer is broadly the same list. It is:

The air fryer is better at crisping because the airflow is faster and the basket exposes the underside. Chips, wings, anything breaded, anything reheated that was once fried.

The toaster oven is better at anything flat and anything you need to see — a tray of cookies, cheese on toast, a couple of slices of pizza, browning the top of something. It has a door, a rack and a light, and a basket has none of those.

Neither is a replacement for a full oven, and both are dramatically cheaper to run than one for a small quantity, which is the actual reason both exist.

Which one earns the counter

The deciding question is not capability. It is what you eat and how much counter you have.

  • You reheat takeaway, cook frozen food, or want crisp things: air fryer, and the six-quart if there are three of you.
  • You bake small amounts, do a lot of toast, or cook things on a flat tray: toaster oven — even though the chart doesn’t stock one anywhere in its top twenty, which is itself worth knowing before you shop.
  • You have almost no counter: the number one product on the entire chart is a slim toaster, and there is a reason for that. A great many people wanted toast and a small footprint, and bought exactly that.
  • You cook actual meals for a family: the Crock-Pot slow cooker at number twelve has sixty-two thousand ratings and is doing a completely different job from either. It is worth knowing it is there.

Where these picks came from, honestly

All three read off Amazon’s own Kitchen Small Appliances chart this morning — node 289913 — rank, rating and review count together, best-sellers first. All three are research picks. The mechanical point that an air fryer is a convection oven is uncontroversial and not something we tested; the absence of any toaster oven in the top twenty was counted by hand and is the reason this piece exists.

The one honest warning

Numbers six, eight and sixteen on this chart are all single-serve pod coffee makers from the same brand, and number six carries 3.9 stars across thirty-one thousand ratings.

That is the lowest score of any large seller anywhere in this top twenty, on a review count high enough that it cannot be dismissed as a bad batch. Three listings, three ranks, three quite different scores — 3.9, 4.3 and 4.3 — for machines that look nearly identical on a shelf.

It is the clearest illustration on any chart we have read of why rank and rating have to be read together, and neither one alone means anything. A product can hold a top-ten position on a major chart while a large minority of the people who bought it are unhappy, because rank measures units moved and rating measures how it went afterwards. Advertising and brand recognition move units. They do not move the star count.

The practical version: on a chart like this, scan the ratings column first and the rank column second. Anything under about 4.3 with tens of thousands of reviews is telling you something specific, and it is worth two minutes of finding out what.

The picks

Cosori TurboBlaze air fryer, 9-in-1, 6 qt

Number ten on Amazon's Kitchen Small Appliances chart, 4.8 stars across twenty-one thousand seven hundred ratings — tied for the highest score of anything in that top twenty. Six quarts is the size that actually cooks for a family rather than for one, and the ceramic coating is the answer to the one durable complaint about cheaper baskets, which is the non-stick surface lifting after a year.

Best for
Households of three or more, anything that wants to be crisp, and reheating fried food, which it does better than any other appliance including the oven it came to replace.
Watch out
A six-quart basket is a large object and it does not fold away. Measure the counter and the clearance above it before ordering. And it is a convection oven with a fan, not a fryer — food that was not crisp to begin with does not become crisp.

bella Fits-Anywhere 2-slice slim toaster, long slot

Number one on the whole small appliance chart, 4.2 stars across twenty thousand ratings, and it earns its place here as the honest counter-argument: the best-selling small appliance in America is a plain toaster that does one thing. The long slot takes a whole slice of a bakery loaf rather than the square bread the slot was designed around, and the slim body is the entire proposition — it fits where the appliance you were considering will not.

Best for
Small kitchens, toast, and anybody who has worked out that most of what they wanted an appliance for was toast.
Watch out
Its 4.2 is the lowest score in the top five, and slim toasters are consistently marked down for uneven browning across the slot. That is a real trade for the footprint, not a manufacturing fault.

Chefman Air Fryer, 4 qt

Number eighteen, 4.6 stars across thirty-seven hundred ratings, and the smaller of the two air fryers on this chart. Four quarts suits one or two people and takes noticeably less counter than a six-quart. It is the size to buy if you are unsure whether you will use one — small enough to live in a cupboard between uses, which is what decides whether an appliance survives its first year.

Best for
One or two people, small kitchens, and anyone testing whether they are an air fryer household before committing the counter.
Watch out
Four quarts genuinely will not do a family meal in one batch, and two batches means the first is cold. Its review count is just under a fifth of the Cosori's — not a mark against it, but the shorter record is worth knowing.
