Four of the Top Seven Cat Best-Sellers Are Litter
The cat chart is not about cats. It is about a box, an odour problem, and one opinion that overrules yours — the cat's.

Freyja’s chariot was pulled by cats. The story does not say how, and anyone who has tried to get a cat into a carrier has their own view about it.
The chart, and what it is really about
Our pets door is named after a wolf, and every article in it so far has been about dogs. That is a gap, so here is the cat chart, read off Amazon’s own best-seller list today.
Number one is litter. Number three is litter. Number six is litter. Number seven is litter. Four of the top seven cat products on Amazon are the stuff you put in the box.
Nothing in the top ten is a toy. Nothing is a bed. The cat products people actually buy, in volume, are the ones that manage a smell in a room they live in.
The three questions the chart answers
Read as a set rather than a ranking, the litter list is really three separate decisions:
- Does it clump hard enough to come out whole? A clump that breaks up leaves waste behind and the box degrades between full changes.
- Does it stick to the pan? This is the one nobody thinks about until they own a box with a rough bottom.
- Is it scented, and does the cat agree? Fragrance is sold to the human. The cat gets a vote and exercises it in a way you cannot miss.
The top seller being unscented is the answer to the third question, arrived at by about seventy thousand people.
Where these picks came from, honestly
Off Amazon’s cat chart, rank and rating and review count read today, best-sellers first. We do not own a cat. Everything in the pets door until now has been dog gear from a house with an old big dog in it, and we have said so in those articles because it was true there.
So take this one for exactly what it is: a chart reading, with the trade-offs named. Where a product’s own numbers argue against it — a scented litter in a house with a fussy cat — we have said that too.
The one honest warning
The most expensive litter mistake is not buying the wrong bag. It is changing brands abruptly because a chart said so.
Cats are specific about the surface, and a cat that dislikes the new litter does not complain, it relocates. If you are switching, mix the new into the old over a week or so and let the cat arrive at it. That advice costs nothing and it is worth more than the ranking.
The picks
Dr. Elsey's Ultra unscented clumping clay litter, 40 lb
The number one cat product on Amazon, ahead of every food, toy and treat, with nearly seventy thousand ratings. It is unscented, hard-clumping clay in the largest bag on the chart. The unscented part is the interesting part: the top-selling litter in the country is the one that smells of nothing, which is not what the fragranced shelf in a supermarket would lead you to expect.
- Best for
- Multi-cat homes, and anyone whose cat has started going outside the box — unscented hard-clumping clay is the usual first thing to try.
- Watch out
- Forty pounds of clay is heavy and it is dusty when poured. If you have stairs, or a wrist that complains, the smaller bags of the others on this list are a real consideration.
Fresh Step Extreme Clump multi-cat clumping litter, 14 lb
Number three on the chart at 4.6 stars across fifty thousand ratings, and a full point of average above the leader. Fourteen pounds is the size most people can actually carry from the car, and the tighter clumps are the practical difference — a clump that holds together comes out whole instead of crumbling into the clean litter.
- Best for
- One or two cats, a normal-sized house, and anyone who scoops daily and wants that to take thirty seconds.
- Watch out
- It is scented. Some cats genuinely object, and a cat that objects to litter tells you by not using it, which is a much bigger problem than the smell you were solving.
ARM & HAMMER Slide Platinum clumping litter, 18 lb
Number six, 4.6 stars, and it solves a different problem to the other two: the litter is coated so waste slides off the bottom of the pan instead of cementing to it. If you have ever chipped a box out with a scoop and then thought about replacing the box, that is the thing this is for.
- Best for
- Anyone who hates cleaning the box more than they mind the litter itself, and plastic boxes that have gone slightly rough inside.
- Watch out
- The coating is doing the work, so it is not a litter to stretch thin. Under-fill the box and you lose the one feature you paid for.
INABA Churu lickable cat treats
Not litter, and the highest-rated cat product in the top ten at 4.9 stars — the sort of average that usually only appears on products with a hundred ratings, not thirteen thousand. It is a purée in a tube that the cat licks straight from your hand, which makes it useful for far more than a treat: it is how people get a nervous cat to come out, hold still for a brush, or accept being handled.
- Best for
- Shy cats, vet-visit prep, nail clipping, and giving a cat a reason to like a person it has decided about.
- Watch out
- It is rich and it is a treat, not food. It also creates a very fast habit — the tube gets recognised by sound, and you will be asked about it daily from then on.
