What a First Cat Needs Beyond Litter and Food

Eighteen of the top twenty cat best-sellers are food, treats or litter. The chart sells no carrier, no scratching post and no brush. Here is what it leaves out.

A soft-sided grey cat carrier standing open on a pale wood floor with its mesh door folded back, a tall sisal-wrapped scratching post beside it, and a slicker brush and a fabric lint roller lying together on the boards in front, warm window light from the left

Freyja’s chariot was drawn by two cats, and no story bothers to say what she fed them. The gods keep the parts of a life that make a good telling and quietly leave out the rest — which is more or less how a best-seller chart works.

Eighteen of the top twenty are food, treats or litter

Amazon’s cat supplies chart is ranked by units sold. Sorted by what the products are:

  • Eight cat foods, wet and dry
  • Five litters
  • Five treats
  • One enzyme stain and odour remover — at ten, on 127,805 ratings
  • One indoor security camera — at eighteen, on 45,660 ratings

Eighteen of the twenty are something a cat eats or something it eliminates into. The remaining two are a cleaner for when that goes wrong and, remarkably, a Ring camera — a product with no feline function whatsoever that sells in enough volume through this category to hold a top-twenty slot.

What the chart contains zero of: carriers, scratching posts, beds, brushes, nail clippers, toys, bowls.

Why the chart cannot answer this question

Because it is measuring frequency, not need.

Litter and food are bought every few weeks forever. A carrier is bought once and outlives the cat. A scratching post is bought once every few years. On a chart ranked by units moved, a consumable will always bury a durable, no matter how essential the durable is.

So the cat supplies chart is an excellent record of what a cat costs to run and a useless guide to what a cat costs to start. For that you have to go into the subcategories, which is where the carriers, posts and brushes actually live — and where the numbers are much smaller and much more honest.

The four things a first cat needs on day one

A carrier. Before the cat, not after. A cat that has never been in a carrier and must be put in one during an emergency is a genuinely hard problem, and the standard advice — leave it open in the room as furniture for a fortnight — only works if you own it early.

Something vertical to scratch. Scratching is not a behaviour to be trained out; it is how a cat maintains its claws and marks territory. The only real decision is whether the approved object is taller and more stable than your sofa arm.

A brush. Every hair you remove is a hair not swallowed. Hairballs are the most common minor complaint in indoor cats and brushing is upstream of all of it.

Something to get hair off everything else. This is the item nobody warns first-time owners about and everybody buys within a month.

Where these picks came from, honestly

The top-level cat chart was read this morning, and when it turned out to contain none of the products this article is about, we pulled the carriers, grooming, and beds and furniture subcategory charts on the same morning and took the picks from those. Ranks, ratings and review counts are all from today. Carriers node 2975250011, grooming node 2975268011, beds and furniture node 2975243011.

These are research picks. This household runs dogs, not cats, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The reasoning about post height and early carrier habituation is standard, well-evidenced advice rather than anything we have lived; the chart finding is ours.

The one honest warning

The security camera at number eighteen is the item to think hardest about, and not for the reason you would expect.

A camera in the room is genuinely useful for a new cat — hiding under furniture for the first week is normal, and being able to see whether they have eaten without standing over them helps. That part is fine.

The warning is what it is doing on a cat supplies chart at all. It is there because it converts well against searches like “new cat” and “cat camera”, not because it is cat equipment. It is the clearest single example on any chart we have read of a product ranking inside a category it does not belong to — and once you have seen it, you will start noticing how often the chart you are trusting is not a chart about your problem.

The picks

Henkelion Cat Carrier for Small and Medium Cats

Number three on the cat carriers chart at 4.6 stars across 53,198 ratings, the most-reviewed carrier in that chart's top ten. A carrier is the one item a new cat owner needs on day one and almost nobody buys until the first vet appointment forces it.

Best for
The first carrier, and for cats up to a normal adult weight who travel a few times a year.
Watch out
Soft-sided carriers are easier to store and harder to clean. A cat that is frightened enough will urinate in transit, and fabric holds that in a way a hard plastic shell does not.

ChomChom Roller Pet Hair Remover

The most-reviewed product on any of the cat charts we read today at 205,600 ratings on 4.5 stars, sitting at number two in grooming. It uses no adhesive sheets and no power, which is why it is still selling a decade in.

Best for
Upholstery, car seats and anything a lint roller sheet gives up on. It is the tool people replace three products with.
Watch out
It is for fabric, not for the cat. It also does very little on short flat-weave surfaces, and nothing at all on hard floors, where a vacuum is still the answer.

Amazon Basics Cat Scratching Post, Medium

Number seven on the cat beds and furniture chart at 4.4 stars across 16,036 ratings. Height is the specification that matters and the one most cheap posts get wrong: a cat wants to scratch at full stretch, and a post shorter than a standing cat gets ignored in favour of the sofa arm.

Best for
A first post, and specifically for a cat that has already started on furniture.
Watch out
Sisal rope posts shed fibre for the first few weeks and need re-securing at the top eventually. A post that wobbles will not be used at all, so the base matters as much as the height.

Aumuca Cat Brush for Shedding

Number four in cat grooming at 4.4 stars across 38,195 ratings. Grooming is the item first-time owners skip and then need urgently in spring, and brushing is the only thing that reduces hairballs at the cause rather than treating them afterwards.

Best for
Short and medium coats, and for building the habit early while a kitten still tolerates handling.
Watch out
Slicker brushes have fine bent wires and it is genuinely easy to brush too hard and scratch skin, especially on a thin-coated cat. Light passes, and stop before the cat asks you to.
