The Puzzle Chart Sells Glue and Boards
Five of the top twenty puzzle best-sellers are not puzzles, three of them glue. Only five are adult jigsaws, and number three is furniture.

After Ragnarok, when the flood has gone down and the surviving gods return to the green plain, the first thing they find lying in the grass are the golden game pieces the old gods played with. Not weapons. Not treasure. The pieces of a game somebody had been in the middle of, kept whole through the end of the world.
Five of the top twenty are not puzzles
Amazon’s puzzle chart, ranked by units sold, sorted by what the products are:
- Five adult jigsaws — at four, eight, ten, eighteen and nineteen
- Seven kids’ puzzles — wooden, chunky, alphabet, shapes
- Four accessories — a rotating puzzle board and three separate bottles of glue
- Three brain teasers — a Rubik’s Cube, a Kanoodle, a speed cube
- One baby play mat, which is foam floor tiles and not a puzzle by any reading
The highest-placed thing on the puzzle chart that is not a puzzle is a rotating puzzle board, at number three. Not a puzzle. A piece of furniture for doing puzzles on.
Why the accessories outrank the puzzles
Because a puzzle is done once and an accessory is used forever.
Somebody who does jigsaws seriously might buy four or five puzzles a year, and they will buy them from anywhere — a shop, a charity shop, a swap with a friend. The board, the mat and the glue are bought once, deliberately, and almost always online, because no supermarket carries them.
So the chart is not measuring what puzzlers do. It is measuring the moment somebody stops being a casual puzzler and starts equipping for it — and that is a much rarer, much more searchable, much more online event.
Three glues in one top twenty is the clearest signal of it. Nobody buys puzzle glue by accident.
What that means if you are buying for a puzzler
The accessories are the better gift, and they are the harder thing for the recipient to choose for themselves.
Puzzles are intensely personal — image, piece count, brand cut, finish. Buying someone a thousand-piece jigsaw of a subject you guessed at is a coin flip. Buying them the mat that lets them leave one out between sessions is not, and it improves every puzzle they own rather than adding one.
The exception is a limited or artist-series puzzle, where the image is the point and the person has told you what they like.
Where these picks came from, honestly
Ranks, ratings and review counts read straight off Amazon’s puzzle chart this morning, best-sellers first, and every candidate checked against the ten games articles already on this site. The chart’s top three — the rotating board, the Rubik’s Cube and the Kanoodle — are all already covered in our piece on what the puzzle chart says people finish, so this article deliberately works the part of the chart that piece did not. Chart node 166359011.
These are research picks with a relevant background. Tony ran a game shop for about four years, and the observation that accessories are the safer gift than the game itself is a shop-floor one rather than a chart one.
The one honest warning
Glue is the most-sold accessory on this chart and it is the one most people should not buy.
Three separate glues in a top twenty means a great many people are gluing puzzles, and gluing is permanent. A glued puzzle cannot be redone, cannot be lent, cannot go to a charity shop and cannot be handed to a grandchild. It becomes a picture, and it competes with every other picture for wall space in a way a puzzle in a box never had to.
There is a real case for it — a genuinely special image, a memorial puzzle, something a person made together over a hard winter. Those are worth framing.
But the chart cannot distinguish between “I want to keep this one forever” and “I have just finished a puzzle and feel like I should do something with it,” and the second feeling is far more common than the first. The mat at number twenty-one serves the second feeling much better: it lets you keep the puzzle whole for a week, show it to people, and then break it up like you always did.
The picks
YAKAMOZ Jigsaw Puzzle Glue Clear with Scraper, 200mL
Number twenty at 4.7 stars across 3,806 ratings, and the highest-rated of the three separate puzzle glues in this chart's top twenty. The included scraper matters more than the glue does — spreading it with a spare piece of card is how people get streaks.
- Best for
- Preserving a finished puzzle to frame or hang, particularly a limited or gift puzzle you do not intend to break up.
- Watch out
- Glue is a one-way decision. A glued puzzle cannot be done again, cannot be passed on and cannot be donated, which is the opposite of how most puzzles earn their keep.
Buffalo Games Roll-Up Puzzle Mat, Fits up to 1500 Pieces
Number twenty-one at 4.0 stars across 4,919 ratings, just outside the twenty. The single most common reason a large puzzle never gets finished is that the table it lives on is needed for dinner, and a mat is the only thing that solves that.
- Best for
- Anyone without a dedicated puzzle surface, which is nearly everyone.
- Watch out
- At 4.0 it is the lowest-rated product anywhere near the top of this chart, and the recurring complaint is consistent: rolling and unrolling shifts loose pieces at the edges. Roll it loosely, and roll it toward the completed section.
RoseArt Jigsaw Puzzle Glue with Applicator
Number fifteen at 4.6 stars across 6,856 ratings — the most-reviewed puzzle glue on the chart by a wide margin, which is the useful number when three near-identical products sit within a few places of each other.
- Best for
- The same job as the pick above, with a longer track record behind it.
- Watch out
- All of these glues dry with a faint sheen. On a matte-finish puzzle that reads as a change in the image, so test on the back or on a spare piece before committing to the face.
MasterPieces Puzzle Glue with Wide Plastic Spreader
Number seventeen at 4.6 stars across 8,382 ratings. The wide spreader is the difference in practice: a narrow applicator on a thousand-piece puzzle means many passes, and every extra pass is another chance to lift a piece.
- Best for
- Large puzzles, 1000 pieces and up, where coverage speed genuinely matters.
- Watch out
- Puzzle glue soaks through gaps and bonds the puzzle to whatever is underneath. Wax paper or a mat below is not optional, and finding that out afterwards means losing the table as well as the puzzle.
